Project Overview

The existing electrical infrastructure and back up power systems at the Port Pirie hospital was outdated and in desperate need of upgrade, the current hospital was not 100% backed up with only the essential 25% of supplies backed up in the event of a power failure.  The exiting generator was a 1970s V12 600KVA generator which was nearing end of life and was not capable of handling the hospitals complete load.  The decision made by SA health with the management of DPTI was to upgrade all electrical infrastructure including the supply and install of a new 1000KVA generator set.  This major electrical upgrade of the hospital will ensure staff and patients in the event of mains power failure would have complete 100% backup power resulting in a complete and functional hospital.

Our Role

EDC were engaged by SA Health through DPTI for the supply and installation of complete new electrical infrastructure to the Port Pirie Hospital including a 100% hospital supported backup power generator. Project was to run in parallel with a live hospital with new infrastructure to be cutover in stages.  EDC periodically cutover over 40+ switchboards including 2 x Main switchboards complete with automatic changeover switches (ATS) and all associated submains/control.  The sensitive nature and 24/7 operation of the major area hospital required EDC to ensure critical structured works plans were in place with all hospital staff when cutting over areas while still maintaining  hospital operation.  EDC Supplied, installed and managed the below installations.

  • 1000KVA CAT generator
  • Fuel pumping systems
  • 11,000 litres of fuel storage
  • Variable speed load banks
  • Main Switchboard Replacements
  • Generator ATS control
  • Switchboard replacements
  • Submain installations
  • Earthing upgrades
  • Cable tray and cable support systems
  • Removal of existing redundant electrical cables, supports, generator and switchboards
  • Builders works including construction of switchboard housing/rooms
  • Civil and concreting works
  • EMS/BMS systems for energy monitoring and alarm notifications.
  • Transformer LV switching replacement
  • Local circuit upgrade to RCD protection.
  • AS3003 body protect and cardiac protect wiring
