Project Overview

The existing electrical infrastructure and back up power systems at the various hospitals was outdated and in desperate need of upgrade, all hospitals existing power generation systems are note reliable enough to handle the 100% load in the event of a blackout. All hospitals generators are end of life averaging age from the 1960’s-early 1990s. The decision made by SA health with the management of DPTI was to upgrade all electrical infrastructure including the supply and install of a new generators ranging from 110KVA-550KVA.  This major electrical upgrade of all hospitals will ensure staff and patients in the event of mains power failure would have complete 100% backup power resulting in a complete and functional hospital.

Our Role

EDC were engaged by SA Health through DPTI for the supply and installation of complete new electrical infrastructure to each of the hospitals Wallaroo, Burra, Cleve, Clare, Peterborough and Coober Pedy.  The project scope was ensure that each of the hospitals in the event of mains failure would be 100% hospital supported by backup power generator. Project was to run in parallel with a live hospital with new infrastructure to be cutover in stages.  EDC periodically cutover over  multiple switchboards at each locations complete with new ATS and control systems. The sensitive nature and 24/7 operation of each hospital required EDC to ensure critical structured works plans were in place with all hospital staff when cutting over areas while still maintaining  hospital operation.  EDC Supplied, installed and managed the below installations.

  • Fuel pumping systems
  • fuel storage
  • Variable speed load banks
  • Main Switchboard Replacements
  • Generator ATS control
  • Switchboard replacements
  • Submain installations
  • Earthing upgrades
  • Cable tray and cable support systems
  • Removal of existing redundant electrical cables, supports, generator and switchboards
  • Builders works including construction of switchboard housing/rooms
  • Civil and concreting works
